The forward collision warning failed in traffic during my commute, this was followed 5 seconds later by a brake light failure and turn signal failure. I pulled over and decided to reboot/restart the car.

Then start the car , clear the faults and see if the P0697 comes back, or if the fault becomes something related to the sensor you disconnected. It's just a theory, but you could have a faulty sensor which is dragging down the 5V supply from the ECU.

Im sure there is a list somewhere of what codes are associated with it and which arent, but essentially you will get that message with engine trouble codes.
You can do your own diagnosis by using a code reader from the Alfa Romeo diagnostic code reader section, and we would recommend the iCarsoft i950 kit which will read out the Alfa Romeo problem code or Alfa Romeo fault code, once the fault has been fixed the code can be cleared from the system memory and the light can be removed from the dashboard.
